The Nation Behind Transnationalism
Abstract
The papers presented in this panel address the various temporal dimensions and social dynamics of state and nation-building processes. Examples are taken from Nepal in the 18th century; the Hindu community in Bengal during British colonial rule; the Italian diaspora in the French colony of Tunisia during the interwar period; and the Bangladeshi community in modern-day Japan and Australia. Rather than adopting a top-down perspective, the presentations will emphasise the importance of social negotiation processes. Another focus will be the transnational dimensions of nation-building processes and their impact on the identity constructions of diaspora groups. Particular attention will be paid to the narratives of national history.
