Global South Scholarships

Eighth Congress of the European Network in Universal and Global History (ENIUGH), Växjö, Sweden, 10−12 September 2025

ENIUGH and the Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies invite applications for a limited number of grants for selected congress presenters from the Global South in order to facilitate their participation at the Eighth ENIUGH Congress, to be held in Växjö, Sweden, 10−12 September 2025. The call is open to presenters and co-authors with limited funding possibilities based in low or middle income countries. Each scholarship consists of (i) waiver of the congress fee and (ii) economy class return airfare from the nearest convenient airport of the recipient’s home institution to either Stockholm or Copenhagen airport. The scholarships are intended to cover part of the total cost of participation at the ENIUGH Congress in Växjö. Recipients will still be required to cover additional costs, including for local travel, accommodation and meals, by other means.

All flight tickets need to be booked through Linnaeus University’s travel agency and only after notification of approval of the scholarship according to instructions to be provided upon notification to successful applicants. The scholarship does not permit the reimbursement of any costs paid directly by the applicant or his/her home institution.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must fulfil all of the following criteria:

  • At the time of the deadline for application, be employed as a teacher, researcher or postdoctoral fellow or be enrolled as a PhD student at a higher education institution located in a low or middle income country according to the 2025 classification of the World Bank
  • Be accepted as a presenter or co-presenter of a paper at the Eighth ENIUGH Congress
  • Have the intention to participate in the entire congress in person (not online) in Växjö
  • Not having a received a scholarship to take part in the International Summer School Towards Inclusive Global Histories, organised by ENIUGH and partner institutions in Växjö, 8−9 September 2025 (however, participants who will take part in the summer school but who have not received a scholarship for that purpose are still eligible to apply for the presently announced scholarship)

Application Procedure

Applications should be sent by e-mail to eniugh-congress@uni-leipzig.de with the subject line “Global South Scholarship” by 22 June 2025. The application package must be formatted as a single pdf document containing the following sections and headlines:

  1. Personal information
    1. Applicant’s full name and address
    1. Applicant’s nationality
    1. Applicant’s position and institutional affiliation
  2. Title and abstract of the accepted congress presentation, including names of co-presenter/s if applicable
  3. A brief justification for applying (250 words maximum) explaining why funds are being requested and information about the travel arrangements for which funds are requested.
  4. Short CV (2 pages maximum)
  5. Copy/photo of identity-card or passport
  6. For PhD students: Letter of endorsement by main supervisor

Incomplete or late applications will be rejected without evaluation.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be assessed by an evaluation committee appointed by steering group of the Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies based on the following criteria:

  • Novelty and scientific quality of the congress presentation
  • Academic merits of the applicant in relation to career level
  • Justification and need for funding

Applicants will be notified by 1 July 2025. No motivation to the selection of successful applicants will given and the decision of the evaluation committee cannot be appealed.
